We have been learning about measurement as our weekly focus. So why not get outside and try some real life learning, measuring the oval, the basketball court, timing the speed that we can run around these places and also measuring perimeter of different shapes and places. 5-6J took their Aussie 5 manners with them and had lots of fun trying out different measuring devices. We used trundle wheels, tape measures, rulers and stop watches. Students were required to use correct units of measurement to accurately record our results. We have one task to finish - our very own paper plane competition, stay tuned!
This week we have been learning about the different size of angles, their names and properties, and also how to measure and construct angles. One activity that we had to complete was a jigsaw puzzle to create matching angles with their measurements. This task was quite involved and required some precise measuring skills, as well as problem solving to create the final product. This is what we created:
How incredibly lucky are we to have six iPads in our classroom. Already, we have used them for a number of ways to extend our learning every day. While some students are using iPads, others are working together using atlases to research. A great way for students to learn that knowledge can be sourced from a variety of places. This term we are learning all about our amazing country and the development of our government system in preparation for our Canberra excursion. I love the way 5/6J are collaborating and using essential communication skills to help each other learn even more than I expected. Very proud of the teamwork skills our students are developing. There are a couple of photos of students researching our states and territories, neighbouring countries and surrounding oceans.
One of the contract spelling activities is to create a picture representation of the weekly spelling words. Here are two examples from Paige squared. If you haven't tried tagxedo, click on the link below to experiment and create your own. I can't wait to see more of these masterpieces. Well done girls!
