This week we have been lucky enough to have Izac, Maddi and Peri Perry share their cooking expertise. They have researched easy recipes to cook at school and used their talents to type up a recipe and some hygiene and safety tips. Izac made a delicious ice cream no bake slice and the girls made a scrumptious caramel slice. They learned the importance of following step by step instructions and time management. We discussed the importance of healthy eating and the decisions around 'sometimes' food. Recipes will be coming home soon and would be a nice treat for the holidays. I love cooking with my boys at home - and school was just as much fun. A big THANK YOU to Mrs Godwin for her assistance. We couldn't have done it without her.

This week we have been learning about position. We have been practising our compass points, scale and measuring distances to the nearest metre using trundle wheels. What an exciting opportunity to take the learning outside the classroom (and play an evil trick on the class). Groups were in charge of organising a course around the school grounds using 6 steps. First, they had to draw on a map, then they had to go outside and work out which direction and how many metres, each step involved. Next, Miss Tamsett and I took a group each to follow the directions of 2 different groups. Little did the students know - I had hidden 2 treasures at the end of the course - 1 nice and 1 not so nice. The look on the kids face was priceless. Have a look at the photos below. In the middle of our scavenger hunt, Mr Cameron challenged us to a Tug-of-war with 2T. Unfortunately, Year 5/6 were beaten by some very competitive Year 2 students. Well done 2T you champions!
This term we are learning about the Earth, moon and sun. We have been investigating the rotations and exploring some misconceptions. The students have made an orrery showing how the Earth rotates around the sun. The trick was to also show how the moon rotates around the Earth. They have done an outstanding job and will get the chance to improve on their models before the end of term.
This week's spelling list includes the word tsunami. A number of students were interested in finding out more, so Perri Perry completed some research and found out:
A tsunami, also known as a seismic sea wave, is a series of waves in a water body caused by the displacement of a large volume of water, generally in a ocean or large lake. Thanks for more information, I would like to know more about some recent tsunamis, let's see if somebody can enlighten us? Today's emotion was scared.
Jack - The windows banging and the wind howling mad. I was so close to screaming that my skeleton will come out. My heart was petrified when I saw a ghost. Awwww! Help me, I am too young to die! Lena - Bam! Bam! I felt my heart beating faster, blood rushing through my body, my hair was standing up on the back of my neck. I am paranoid. Bam! "What was that?" chills flowed through my body, an ocean of fear enclosed me. I am frozen - my face is as white as a ghost. Fatima - My heart beating rapidly, I could feel billions of butterflies in my stomach. My hands were shaking out of control. I could hardly move them as goosebumps are appearing all over my body. Lachlan - There was a chill going down my spine when I heard a terrifying scream. I was frozen on the spot, my heart beating as fast as a race car. Ruby - I am paralysed in the corner, crouched into a ball. As I sob silently I wish the terrible dream would go away. I try to scream but nothing comes out. Someone. Help. Please? Today we experimented with using descriptive language to describe simple feelings. For example, the students were asked to write 2-3 sentences to creatively replace the sentence: I was hot. Take a look for yourself at some of the amazing results: Ruby wrote: Sweat was flooding through my body like a waterfall bursting at the seams. My temperature was off the chart, my blood was boiling like water in a cauldron. Zac: It felt like I was in a raging inferno. The sun was blazing harshly. There was no way out.
Tahleah: The sun was scorching as I was sizzling like a sausage. Jessica: Sweat was dripping off my face. I felt like I was on the sun. I was sweltering. Help me! Maddi: Exploding! My sweat glands burst into a sweaty mess. Counting every bit of sweat dripping off my face, I slowly started feeling a burning sensation building up all over my body. Paige B: I could feel my body overheating rapidly, sweat furiously dripping off my body. My body was so exhausted, all I could think of was the delicious, cold taste of water. Liam: The intense heat was as scorching as a sizzling barbecue. Sweat was running through my sunburnt body. Paige P: My mouth was like a desert, not a drop of saliva in sight. I felt as if the devil was inviting me to have dinner inside a volcano. Four super excited teachers zoomed down to Wickham on Friday 4th September to learn some exciting techniques to improve our students' writing. 5/6J positively excelled with their 'Sizzling Starts' yesterday. 'BAM!' they smashed out fantastic openings to impress me with their passion for learning. We have learnt that the first seven seconds of writing captures the reader's attention and we are experimenting with action, sounds and dialogue. See for yourself how they are doing:
Topic: The Christmas dinner from hell I really didn't want it to happen. Christmas time and all my family arrived for dinner. All of a sudden, hell breaks loose! "Stop the yelling! Mum, Aunty Kath, stop fighting! I mean...it's Christmas." Tia "Owie, owie, owie! Why did you touch the burning stove?" Screaming and crying, Tommy answers, " I don't know." His father yells from downstairs, "He's only five you know!" Maddi "Bam!" It was Christmas and I had to babysit my two little troublemakers, they're destroying the house! I can't wait for dinner to finish! Smick Man oh man! The meat's overcooked and the guests will be arriving in ten minutes. We don't have time to make another... Kal We have been learning about measurement as our weekly focus. So why not get outside and try some real life learning, measuring the oval, the basketball court, timing the speed that we can run around these places and also measuring perimeter of different shapes and places. 5-6J took their Aussie 5 manners with them and had lots of fun trying out different measuring devices. We used trundle wheels, tape measures, rulers and stop watches. Students were required to use correct units of measurement to accurately record our results. We have one task to finish - our very own paper plane competition, stay tuned! This week we have been learning about the different size of angles, their names and properties, and also how to measure and construct angles. One activity that we had to complete was a jigsaw puzzle to create matching angles with their measurements. This task was quite involved and required some precise measuring skills, as well as problem solving to create the final product. This is what we created:
How incredibly lucky are we to have six iPads in our classroom. Already, we have used them for a number of ways to extend our learning every day. While some students are using iPads, others are working together using atlases to research. A great way for students to learn that knowledge can be sourced from a variety of places. This term we are learning all about our amazing country and the development of our government system in preparation for our Canberra excursion. I love the way 5/6J are collaborating and using essential communication skills to help each other learn even more than I expected. Very proud of the teamwork skills our students are developing. There are a couple of photos of students researching our states and territories, neighbouring countries and surrounding oceans.
