This term we have been investigating changes in solids and liquids. We have conducted several experiments with melting and freezing, watched milk change properties and also made some sensational sherbet. In our technology lessons, the students have been learning how to use the website 'Smore' to create some posters about our adventures. Have a look at some of the results below:

Each day, the students have to complete two spelling activities: the first is a LSCWC - look, say, cover, write and check; and the second activity is one of their spelling contract activities. These activities cater for different learning styles and the many choices include: designing a spelling artwork, back-to-back spelling, definitions, syllables, researching etymology, alphabetical order, creating a jingle, and many more. Spelling art is proving popular with our creative minds - as you can see below. Another great idea was the invention of a new spelling game called body spelling by Jack. Here you can see the class not only revising their spelling, but also learning some invaluable lessons in teamwork.
Our students have been very busy completing addition and subtraction tasks in their maths groups. We have been investigating different methods of working out answers: formal algorithms, jump strategy, split strategy and using concrete materials. 5/6J realised that the trickiest part of addition and subtraction using the formal/written method involved trading. My highlight for the week was that 'lightbulb' moment - a massive smile on a girl's face when she came and told me that she knows how to work the questions out - and that she found them easy now! Just goes to show what some hard work and commitment can do :)
Today in our maths lesson, we were allowed to use calculators to help check our answers. Some people thought that using a calculator is cheating, but it is actually an important skill to learn for our future. Our group activities were: one minute maths factor race, working out the best combinations of the 100 chart, making arrays and a "Who wants to be a millionaire" factors game on the Smartboard. Lots of fun and "maths talk" happening. 5/6J are very lucky to have Mrs Cameron in our room every Wednesday. Today we had the pleasure of listening to her read the next few chapters of our novel. We are all using our Aussie 5 rule- I can listen. How come when I went to school, I didn't get to have m&m's in my math's class?
Oh well... This week's maths focus is chance and data. First 5/6J had to construct a tally chart showing how many of each colour m&m were in their bag. Next, in our technology lesson, they had to construct a column graph on the computer to show their results. Well, the computer really helped us do the hard work this time. We used a program called Microsoft Excel to input our data and then Mrs John showed us how to get the computer to do some of our maths for us and work out totals and percentages of each colour. Some students even took things a step further and created some line graphs, dot graphs and even more. The results were incredible, well done 5/6J for challenging yourselves and producing quality work! |
